Far from being your typical Italian vacation, “Under The Umbrian Spell” is our version of what a diverse journey combining food, wine and culture should be. Staying in an 11th century church and farmhouse is just the icing on the tiramisu!

Join us on this journey discovering or re-discovering a true pallet of colors and flavors. Spend 7 nights in a breathtakingly renovated 11th century church and country house situated in the middle of vineyards and olive groves. Enjoy your own bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and be pampered by our staff and resident chef. Your stay include all dinners at the property, as well as hands-on (or not) cooking classes, wine tastings and guided tours of the region. As always with Art In Voyage, flexibility is key. A courtesy car will be at your disposal for private escapes or excursions outside of our itinerary.  Many other services and experiences may be be arranged at your request (How about a romantic picnic in a vineyard? Or perhaps a spa treatment at one of the local Relais & Chateaux properties?)

If you have not yet visited Umbria and discovered its infinite beauty and the kindness of its people, this is your chance to do so.

A light yet complete itinerary

Armed with some of the best local guides, get to know the towns and villages of Umbria without ever being bored. Enjoy a light and carefully-thought itinerary to discover what this Umbria has to offer, all while enjoying its traditions and its beauty.

ITINERARY

All activities are optional in attendance

Day 1: Welcome to Umbria

Your private (group) transfers from Rome and Florence airport are included. Under two and a half hour, you find yourself in our little piece of heaven, where your hosts await with prosecco. Tonight, we hold our welcome dinner, carefully prepared by our local chef.

Day 2: Assisi

On this Sunday morning, we discover the incredible town of Assisi. A private guide awaits for a 3-hour walking tour followed by lunch (own account) and the afternoon discovering the town and its shops. We then head back to the estate for some time spent by the pool, or enjoying the ground, before sunset drinks and dinner in the vineyards.

Day 3: Local farms and producers

A magical morning spent in the countryside of Montefalco! We begin with a visit to a family farm where we will meet the animals, notably various breeds of Italian cattle, and sample cheeses and yogurt made from their cows, sheep and goats! We then take a stroll through the beautiful hilltop village of Montefalco to see local producers of linens, olive wood and more! Our final stop is a small farm just under the walls of the town where we will learn about biodiversity and how all of the animals ‘help out’ from honeybees, to chickens & geese, to the pigs and sheep! We conclude the day enjoying a light lunch on the farm. Tonight is pizza night at the estate.

Day 4: Truffle hunting and Orvieto

This morning, for the most courageous ones, our chef takes us truffle hunting with the local specialist. The truffles you find will be used for a very special dinner tonight. After this adventure, we head to Orvieto for a 2-hour guided tour of the Duomo and the undergrounds before some time at leisure to discover the rest of the town. A mid-afternoon return to the estate allows for some down time before yet another lovely dinner prepared by our chef.

Day 5: Cooking class and Perugia

Today, our local chef introduces you to pasta and tiramisu making. At the estate, learn how to make traditional fresh pastas and Italian's favorite dessert, before lunch is served. After some espresso to wake everyone up from what will certainly be a fantastic meal, we head to Perugia, Italy's (contested) Chocolate capital. There, we are hosted at a local artisan's for a demonstration on chocolate making, served with dessert wine. Dinner is served at the estate by our chef, and carefully paired with local wines.

Day 6: Siena - Montepulciano

Today, we cover Tuscany. Bordering Umbria, this giant neighbor is home to two of our favorite (and soon to be yours) towns: Siena and Montepulciano. In the first one, we discover the home of the Palio, the famous horserace that takes place twice a year on the Piazza Del Campo. After lunch (own account), we depart for the less busy yet equally exciting town of Montepulciano. Should time permits, we make a stop by one of our favorite wineries (Poliziano). Tonight, dinner is once again prepared by our chef, and paired with exciting Tuscan wines.

Day 7: Day at leisure and Montone

This is your day! To pack, relax by the pool or pack more in your schedule with one of our favorite activities (be it biking, hiking, shopping for locally made cashmere products or horseback riding in the vineyards). Remember, a courtesy car is at your disposal if you have not had enough and feel the urge to discover more. Or ask one of our hosts about recommendations. Tonight, we hold our farewell dinner in Montone at our favorite eatery. It is paired with lovely regional wines and after-drinks.

Day 8: Take the opportunity to extend your stay

Your transfer for the airport or train station is included this morning. Discover Italy beyond Umbria. Allow us to design, for you, a customized extension to Rome, Florence, Venice, or any other Italian or European city. Our experts will listen to your centers of interest and make their recommendations based on those, time allotted and budget.

OUR HOME BASE

Chiesa Del Carmine

Chiesa del Carmine is the ancient church on the Carmine Estate, located in the heart of Umbria, only 20 minutes north of the cosmopolitan city of Perugia and close to the borders of Tuscany.

Carmine estate is privately owned and has been lovingly restored over the last 5 years by the present owners. What was once an abandoned valley is now a thriving farm including an ancient olive grove, 5.7 hectares of red and white grapes, a truffle wood and pasture, producing a variety of organic produce. Located at the foot of Monte Tezio in a protected valley, where the wildlife is abundant and nature is thriving, it boasts stunning views and sunsets.

Chiesa del Carmine has been restored along with its adjoining farmhouse into a simple but elegant country house which sleeps 10 guests in 5 carefully appointed en-suite rooms. The owner has paid precise attention to detail and use of the very best of local materials, producing accommodation of outstanding quality.

The property can also be privatized through Art In Voyage for groups of up to 12 guests (a 6th bedroom with detached bathroom is available in the property), and for weddings. Contact us for more information
