This morning, after breakfast we make our way to the Damaraland Reserve. Our route takes us through Twyfelfontein, which recently gained UNESCO World Heritage Status. Ai-Aiba -The Rock Painting Lodge is dramatically set against imposing granite boulders in the foothills of the Erongo Mountain range. Steeped in history these ancient rock formations are the eroded remains of a volcanic complex about 130 million years old. Admire the magic of the breathtaking landscape, gently touched by the mystic colors of the setting sun with a choice of walking trails or sun-downer tours.
The lodge with its high thatched roof restaurant, lounge and pool is an oasis surrounded by tall palms and scenic vistas of magnificent rocky outcrops and bush savanna. AiAiba is a Khoekhoegowab word meaning `the person who walks in front to show the way`. There, Nature walks and drives led by knowledgeable guides bring this unique experience to life.
Between the vast salt pans of Etosha and the eery windswept beaches of the Skeleton Coast lies Damaraland, a surprising semi-desert that begs a closer look. Damaraland Adventurer Camp sits in the Huab River Valley, with views of the Brandberg Massif and scorched plains. This region receives just enough rain per annum to support a cohort of extremely well-adapted mammals, including elephant, lion, and rhino. Although the harsh conditions are a test for wildlife, they needn't put off travelers – the six-tent camp is outfitted with every creature comfort you'll need to make trekking through this wilderness a pleasure.
Art In Voyage Wild Camping is a pop-up camp put together by our advanced team, complete with full service and modern comfort. It is fully sufficient and operated by a lovely team of 3 individuals who care for our guests day and night. Home-cooked meals, lovely conversations around a camp fire open bar. Our tents are basic, yet comfortable and a great experience.
In a remote area of the Kaokoveld, with gravel-strewn plains and dry riverbeds that draw fascinating wildlife, lies Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. Game drives explore this isolated area, moving along the riverbed’s narrow ribbon of vegetation, where a surprising wealth of desert-adapted animals can be found; in camp the research centre provides even more insights. The unforgiving Skeleton Coast, with its shipwreck remains and noisy colonies of Cape fur seals, is accessed either by a fascinating drive or flight, depending on the weather.
