Hotel d’Aubusson – 5*

Paris, France

On the Left Bank in St-Germain-des-Prés, on a side street a couple of blocks from the Seine and Pont Neuf, you will find this five-star boutique hotel in a 17th-century mansion. Individually decorated rooms exude timeless elegance and the legendary piano bar remains a place of pilgrimage for jazz lovers in Paris. Les Vedettes du Pont Neuf river cruises set sail from beneath the bridge, and the dazzling Monnaie de Paris museum in the city mint is a five-minute walk. Count another five, past the racing-green stalls of Paris’ quayside bouquinistes (book sellers), to reach Notre Dame cathedral.
No two of the 49 rooms are the same. Those in the oldest part of the building overlook the patio garden or a romantic slate-roofed pavilion; many have high beamed ceilings and décor is traditional French Country style, with soft pastel palettes and canopy beds. Rooms facing rue Dauphine in the more recent, 19th-century part of the hotel are slightly bolder in décor and more contemporary: think chic Chanel-like B&W tweed carpet, vintage-motif wallpaper, and cream palette with gold, Bordeaux, or aqua-blue accents perhaps.
