Welcome to the Azores Islands by Art In Voyage. This paradise is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where one may easily feel troubles are a World away. The nine islands of the Azores archipelago were birthed from volcanoes, tiny atolls of black lava emerging from the depths of the sea. Sometimes called the Hawaii of Europe – despite their mid-Atlantic location, the Azores are part of Portugal. They are known for their stunning natural landscapes. There, waterfalls tumble down basalt cliffs, spectacular crater lakes top rainforest-covered hills, and pale-green pastures are hedged by colorful hydrangeas. There’s a rich cultural heritage, too, and welcoming locals are happy to tell stories of their history and traditions over long meals accompanied by plenty of Azorean wine. Join Art in Voyage, to uncover the culture, history, nature, and culinary delights of two of these incredible islands.

Highlights

Incredible Marine Life Viewing

The ocean is central to everything here – it is the highway that connects islanders to the world, an important source of food, and a fundamental part of the Azorean soul. No matter where you are in the archipelago, the sea is ever-present. Dolphins and whales, including huge male sperm whales, are regular visitors.

Azorean Food & Wine

There are hundreds of species of fish in the waters around the Azores and the local fishing fleet uses only sustainable line-caught methods. Feast on delicious grilled fish, indulge in creamy local limpets served with yuzu- soy dressing and white-fish tempura with zingy locally grown jalapeño. Pair your dishes with a local red, white, or rosé made with grapes grown on volcanic soil, and enjoy some of the best cheeses of Europe, all made locally.

Art & Culture

The five centuries of history and tradition in the Azores are most visible in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angra do Heroísmo. You’ll find plenty of traditional Portuguese architecture along its pretty streets, particularly rua da Sé. While rua José Azevedo, in the town of Horta on Faial, and Praça Gonçalo Velho, in the capital Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, are also noteworthy for their well-preserved old buildings.

Outdoor Adventures

The Azores are all about long days spent outdoors. For guests wanting to be more active, every island has superb hiking tracks, often around crater lakes or up rainforest-clad hills. The town of Furnas in São Miguel is home to several naturally heated geothermal pools and hot springs, the perfect ending to any outdoor activity. Active guests will also find the time to bike around the islands and take in the incredible beauty surrounding them.

All good things must come to an end (or must they?). This morning you are transferred to the airport where catch a flight home. True to its name, everything from the whitewashed walls and polished concrete floors to the stone terraces surrounding the pool are brilliant white, warmed by raw wood furniture and tactile fabrics such as wool and linen. The terraces that run the length of the hotel and overlook the sea are spectacular, whether for early-morning yoga to the sound of the waves or a cocktail by the fire pit while you watch the sunset. The white of the rooms and the azure of the ocean are reminiscent of a Greek island, but the converted 18th-century building also has intrinsically Azorean touches, with volcanic stone lintels and, in some rooms, stone beams and detailing. The rooms are all suites, complete with comfortable sofas and a small but high-spec kitchenette, fully equipped for preparing coffee and tea or a light meal. Bathrooms are large with polished concrete floors, big open showers, and organic toiletries by Susanne Kaufmann.
The laid-back feel of the Azores is reflected in the service, which is warm and welcoming without being overly formal. An in-house masseuse is available and yoga classes can be arranged. Or you can hire the hotel’s nine-meter chauffeured motor launch to explore neighboring islands, go scuba diving or swim in a secluded cove.
