Honfleur
Honfleur, Normandy, France
Honfleur is one of Normandy’s most atmospheric harbour towns—a place best enjoyed slowly, preferably with no clipboard and absolutely no whistle-waving guide. Its historic port is framed by tall slate-fronted houses, fishing boats, cafés and small galleries, creating a setting that feels both elegant and wonderfully lived-in.
The town has long attracted painters for its distinctive coastal light, and that artistic spirit still shapes the experience today. Honfleur is ideal for wandering, lingering over seafood or cider, browsing independent shops and watching the harbour change character as the day fades. It is romantic without trying too hard—which, frankly, is rare.

Top Things to Do
Explore the narrow lanes surrounding the harbour, discovering galleries, boutiques, delicatessens and hidden courtyards.
Sample Calvados, pommeau, cider, local cheeses and caramel. A tasting makes an excellent introduction before visiting producers elsewhere in the Pays d’Auge.
A short cruise offers a different perspective of Honfleur, the Seine estuary and, depending on the excursion, the Pont de Normandie.
Order oysters, sole, mussels or another local catch, accompanied by Normandy cider. The view is often better than the food directly on the harbour, so choose carefully.
Top Things to See
Le Vieux Bassin: Honfleur’s historic harbour is the town’s defining image, lined with narrow houses whose façades reflect beautifully in the water. Visit early in the morning and again around sunset.
Église Sainte-Catherine: Built largely in wood by local shipbuilders, its extraordinary vaulted interior resembles the hulls of upturned ships. The separate wooden bell tower sits just across the square
Musée Eugène Boudin: A rewarding small museum featuring works by Boudin and other artists connected to Honfleur and the Seine estuary, including Courbet, Dufy and Jongkind.
The Lieutenance and Saint-Étienne waterfront This historic gateway beside the Vieux Bassin is one of Honfleur’s most handsome corners and an essential part of the harbour walk.
